!OCCUPATION: Farmer !BIO: John J. Garlinger was the third of a family of sixteen children and was reared on a farm. He did not attend school but picked up his learning after his marriage. His parents moved from Pennsylvania to Columbiana County, Ohio sometime after the 1830 Pennsylvania Census. Then in 1849, his parents moved to Hardin County, Ohio. John J. Garlinger appears in the 1850 Hardin County, Ohio Census. He started out his adult life with only 50 cents in his pocket, and, after working around and picking up odd jobs, he succeeded in buying some land in Liberty Township, Hardin County, Ohio. His wife, Mary Hardman, was the daughter of German parents. Mrs. Garlinger was a member of the Christian Church. John Garlinger was a democrat in politics, a Trustee and School Director, and a noted farmer of Liberty Township.
!MISC: The 1870 Hardin Co. Ohio Census has James age 16 and John W. age 9, living with John J. Garlinger. These two boys are the orphaned sons of Horatio and Catherine Morrison Garlinger.
John married Mary Hardman in 1847. (Mary Hardman was born on 1 Feb 1823, died on 26 May 1997 in , Hardin, Ohio and was buried in McElroy Cemetary, Hardin, Ohio.)
