He married Karen Lynn Lee in Richmond, Wayne, Indiana, 31 July 1971. Karen was born in Richmond, Wayne, Indiana 9 November 1946. Karen was the daughter of Forrest Orpha Lee and Marjorie Laferne Moore.

Robert Gene Matthews and Karen Lynn Lee had the following child:

3 i. Meredith Daria³ Matthews was born in Flint, Genesse, Michigna 14 March 1974.
